2001 movies

So, spurred on by Mr. Ra's rant about his most recent movies, I decided I'd go and look up all the movies I saw in 2001 (1). Now, as most of you know, I like almost every movie I lay my eyes on. You name a movie, I can name ten good things about it (2).

So, without further ado, here's the list of the movies that were released in 2001 that I saw (although some I saw in 2002). I've ranked them from worst to best, starting with the most painful (the one I'd least like to re-view) Exit Wounds and ending with the one I saw three times in the theater and wouldn't mind going out to see it right now, The Lord of the Rings.

  1. Exit Wounds
What do I have to say? It's got Steven Seagal... it's pointless, predictable, ridiculous and painful.
  2. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
Whooo... stink-a-roo. Sure I liked it, but I had to shut off tons of my brain to do so.
  3. Ghosts of Mars
You already know I'm a Carpenter fan... but this one is just another disappointment in a long series of disappointments.
  4. Dr. Dolittle 2
I took someone to see this who really wanted to see it, otherwise there wasn't really any chance I was going to see it. It was fine for what I expected to find in this movie, but then again, I really didn't walk into this expecting much.
  5. Someone Like You...
Now, the person I saw this movie with loved it... I just thought nothing happened for two hours. Everything was predictable, but I wasn't at all convinced anything had happened between the two main characters to make them fall in love by the end of the movie.
  6. America's Sweethearts
Guh. It's like all the actors walked through this movie and picked up a paycheck at the end. I went to see it because I'm a sucker for a good John Cusack movie... I should have just seen Serendipity again.
  7. Save the Last Dance
Predicable and it tugs at your heart strings in all the standard ways... I just wanted to smack it's heart tugging fingers away when it tried to.
  8. Sugar & Spice
Sure, some of the characterizations were sweet, but I hate seeing movies about stupid people.
  9. The Musketeer
Now, I went to see this movie purely for the action and the wire work. Fait accompli. Your milage may vary.
  10. 3000 Miles to Graceland
I actually had a lot of fun with this... but I must admit that most people won't like it they way I did - but there's always a sort of magic that Kurt Russell brings to his characters.
The following were fine movies with some flaw somewhere sewn into the weft and the warp... something that just annoyed me for some reason or other.
  • Thir13en Ghosts
Who in the world would step in to that house?
  • The Fast and the Furious
    The hero's a cop?
  • Replicant
Top secret government repiclant project, but sure, we want you to borrow it mr. Police officer.
  • Hannibal
oh god, that last scene punched so many of my buttons.
  • Artificial Intelligence: AI - there were so many aspects of the world/situation I wanted explored that they just abandoned to tell the "child"'s story.
  • Swordfish
Lordy I hate movies that portray hacking... they just never get it right... and I didn't like any of the endings (the DVD provide me with three, and that wasn't enough).
  • Along Came a Spider
The movie starts with a smart, intelligent villain, and then to provide a twist, you get a stupidity. Gah.
  • The Mummy Returns
The effects were still there, but all the charm of the first movie was gone. That's what I was looking forward to, and was let down when found lacking.
  • Bridget Jones's Diary
I just had a hard time caring for any of the characters, frankly.
  • Legally Blonde
I had a hard time getting past the initial premise of the movie. Normally this is never a problem... I watch Godzilla movies with glee, but this one was annoying like a nail under a carpet.
  • Gosford Park
No closure, no feeling for most of the characters, hard to follow dialog... it's lucky the writing was clever and the actors were talented.
The following movies were just fine. I didn't think there was anything glaringly wrong about them... they were a nice way to spend two or so hours and seven bucks.
  • Pearl Harbor
  • Don't Say a Word
  • Rush Hour 2
  • Zoolander
  • Kiss of the Dragon
  • Atlantis: The Lost Empire
  • AntiTrust
  • The Tailor of Panama
  • The Man Who Wasn't There
  • Hearts in Atlantis
  • Others, The
  • Enemy at the Gates
  • Evolution
  • Brotherhood of the Wolf
  • K-PAX
  • Spy Game
  • Planet of the Apes
  • The Score
  • Rock Star
  • Serendipity
  • Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
And that just leaves us with the top movies of 2001. It's not like these were all great movies, they just were better than the other movies I saw in 2001.
  1. Ocean's Eleven
I'm a sucker for Rube Goldberg machine type movies.
  1. Life as a House
I'll always see a Kevin Kline movie, mostly because I love his comedic characters... and so I wasn't expecting a serious role, and was pleasantly rewarded.
  1. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
I didn't read the books, but I liked the effects, the universe and the actors.
  1. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
Man, I just love the graphics, and the way they put them to work... using computer graphics for scenes that just couldn't exist any other way.
  1. Monsters, Inc.
A perfect use of two hours. Plus that short at the beginning was one of the funniest cartoons I've seen in a long time.
  1. American Pie 2
Just as good as the first one, nice, odd and clever.
  1. A Knight's Tale
If you go and rent this movie on DVD, do yourself a big favor and go and watch the deleted scenes. The best part of this movie is Chaucer's speeches, and three of his were left on the editing room floor.
  1. Shrek
Just like Monsters Inc, it's a perfect use of a two hours.
  1. From Hell
I still need to read the book.
  1. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Well, even if I wasn't looking forward to this movie for three years before it came out... even if I wasn't just a big old geek... even if I wasn't a Peter Jackson fan... even if I wasn't a toe-sucking RPGer... good lord... did you see this movie?

1) not an easy task, as I don't keep score as I go along like Ra does... I have to research it with blood, sweat and typing.

2) Although going back and re-watching some movies to churn out that list is sometimes more painful than the list is worth.
